I saw this on Dangerous Minds and thought it was fantastic. Like a lot of other people, I’ve always been a huge fan of John Cage, and I’d never seen this video of his appearance on the old game show, I’ve Got a Secret, it’s a bit too surreal.

That’s fantastic!
Interesting to see how the audience things it is very humourous…as if it is a joke. I can see how they might have seen that, but I love how Cage challenges our ideas of what is music, something he has been doing for some time now.
Ya I understand the audience laughing because they came to laugh. I liked that they laughed though, I like the clip because it shows the power of context. The reaction, even if they transported the same audience, at an art museum or concert hall would be completely different even the art remains the same. I also like it when Cage says something to the effect that he doesn’t mind them laughing as long as they aren’t booing. No matter if they misunderstood it, Cage knows that they’re are still being entertained and enjoying themselves which further validates his mission of expanding people’s views on music.
